Ryan Lochte,Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen were held up a gunpoint early Sunday morning.
“Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” a spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee said. “All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.”
Lochte told NBC News that one of the man, put a gun to his head.
“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte said. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so — I’m not getting down on the ground.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, “Get down,” and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”
The crisis in Rio, pushing unemployment and poverty up, is a top concern, there are more and more violent attacks and robberies. Regarding the issue the Brazilian government employed 85000 people to keep the streets surrounding Olympic Park safe, making them look like military compounds with jeeps and soldiers marching around.
None the less the chief of security was mugged, at the opening night, two Australian coaches have been attacked and robbed, bullets have landed in the equestrian venue, a bus full of news media members was attacked and a security officer was killed in a dangerous neighborhood.
The civil police in the state of Rio said that “investigations are underway about the robbery suffered by American Olympic swimmers.”
Mr. Lochte’s mother claimed that they were all shaken up, and himself stayed silent about the matter. He even said that the attack was untrue.
